How to Choose Hotel-Grade Sheets that Withstand Regular Commercial Laundering

Hotel linens go through an exceptionally challenging lifecycle; they are washed and dried in industrial washing machines frequently and often under high temperatures (against our recommendations) using harsh laundry products (again, against recommendations).

Such regularity puts strain on the fabric fibers, seams, and elasticity, resulting in the quick deterioration of conventional bed sheets that will easily lose their form or simply tear. Therefore, investing in hotel-grade sheets is a smart move for longevity and value and the purchase should be based on an items’ proven durability and long-term comfort.

This article highlights all the important aspects that make commercial bed linens different from retail linens in terms of fabric type, weave quality, fiber structure, finishing, among others.

It also highlights the importance of correct sizing and fit of bed sheets in hospitality settings, certifications and standards, and what a buyer should look for in their purchase.

The Features that Separate Hotel Sheets from Retail

Durability is the first filtering criteria that must be taken into account when preparing for commercial laundering of bedding. The best sheets for high guest turnover are designed to withstand multiple wash cycles without pilling, thinning, or losing their shape. One should prefer items such as stitched bedding, bed sheets made from long-staple or sturdy cotton blends, and secure grip-fitted designs.

The perfect thread count of hotel linens usually ranges from 200 to 400, where comfort and longevity of the fabric are best balanced. Thread counts that are too high can only be achieved using finer yarns that wear out more quickly in industrial laundry processes.

Weaving determines both performance and feel. Most hotel linens use a plain weave where one warp yarn is woven over one weft yarn creating a grid like look. Linens with softer, smoother and silkier hands (like sateen weaves) will not prove as durable as a traditional plain weave. As an example, a sateen weave is very silky smooth to the touch but that is achieved by exposing more of the thread surface in a 4 over 1 weaving pattern. The larger number of yarns exposed gives that soft feel but also means the yarns are exposed to wear more and the product simply will not last as long.

Percale cotton sheets tend to be more durable during commercial washing. Explore the percale plain weave cotton sheet for a durable hospitality option.

Antimicrobial hotel bed sheets are a useful upgrade to improve performance through odor control since they inhibit the growth of bacteria causing odors. Nomad Home® bed sheets come with an antimicrobial property that is natural and permanent, and will not be washed away with use.

Criteria

What to look for

Fabric

Long staple cotton or cotton-poly blends designed for repeated commercial washing

Weave

Plain weaves are the most durable. Sateen weaves, while providing a nice hand, will not last

Thread Count

200-400 is an optimal choice to strike a balance between comfort, durability, and performance

Antimicrobial Finish

Permanent antimicrobial treatment that resists odor-causing bacteria

Skirting/Fit

Deep pocket design with elastic to ensure proper fit every time

Certification

Recognized textile certifications to ensure quality and safe production practices

However, while fabric performance maintains freshness and durability, the total guest experience also relies on the interaction between various bedding layers. Hospitality Linen Standards: Certification, Size, and Scale

Certification builds confidence for both buyers and guests. OEKO-TEX certified hospitality sheet sets are tested for any harmful ingredients and produced in accordance with safety standards. If the property has sustainable or healthy characteristics, then it is always better to ensure the authenticity of the certification before ordering in bulk.

Hospitality sizing differs from standard retail dimensions. Hospitality sheet sizing is typically more generous (for example, Full size mattresses in hospitality is typically 54x80 vs a retail mattress at 54x75) and often includes color-coded size identifiers (i.e. thread colors)  to simplify housekeeping. Nomad Home® bed sheets come in sizes such as Full XL, Queen, and King, and have a skirt that grips well even on commercial beds with toppers.

Bulk sourcing increases the efficiency of the procurement process. By investing in bulk sheet sets for hotels via the use of a wholesale provider such as JLA Hospitality, buyers will enjoy consistent pricing, inventory, and case packs that are appropriate for the larger property as well as vacation properties.

FAQs

How often should hotel sheets be replaced?

It depends on use, but the frequency of sheet replacement would normally be once every 12 to 24 months if washed regularly. Sheets that pill, thin out, gray, or no longer fit snugly should be replaced. Stronger, antimicrobial-treated sheets usually last longer than regular retail sheets.

How many sheet sets are needed per hotel room par level?

The industry standard is to have three sets of linens, where one set is in use, one is being washed in the laundry, and one set is stored as backup. Many establishments will choose to go with four par because of the high occupancy.

Are cotton-poly blend sheets acceptable for upscale hotels?

Yes. Sheets made of cotton and poly blends for luxury hotels are highly durable, wrinkle-resistant, and dry quickly compared to sheets that are all cotton. The use of blends is common among standard room sheets, whereas 100% cotton sheets are common among luxury room sheets.

What water temperature is best for laundering hotel sheets?

Sheet washing in hotels is usually carried out at temperatures above 60°C or 140°F for hygienic reasons as well as to remove dirt. After that, the sheets are dried. This ensures that the sheets do not get worn out easily due to overheating and over-drying.

Do hospitality sheets come with a warranty?

Most of the suppliers provide a warranty on the hospitality bedding for any manufacturing defect and for standard craftsmanship. The Nomad Home® products available at JLA Hospitality come with a warranty on the craftsmanship. Terms and conditions are clearly mentioned on our wholesale page.
